Canon Pixma MG5220 Hardware
As you can see in Figure 5, this Canon PIXMA is a shiny black device with rounded edges. At 17.9 x 14.5 x 6.3 inches (454 x 368 x 160 mm), compact enough for all-in-one. Weighing at at 17.7 lbs (8 kg) makes it strong enough to feel substantial while still quite easy to move around the home or office.
As shown in Figure 6, all controls for the printer are merged in the Panel on the right side of the printer. There is a 2.4 inch LCD, which is bright and clear and angled for easy viewing. The on-screen menu is controlled by three option buttons and the main button below the screen. There is also a scroll wheel that is used to select the menu items.
Just to the left of the scroll wheel is the Back button that will take you to the previous option. Below is the + button and – which determines the number of copies. Below are the black buttons and colors to start printing black or color, copying, or scanning. This button illuminates with a blue light when this function is available. Just to the right of the black button is a handy Stop button that cancels the ongoing work. The power button is just below the color button on the front of the printer.
The right side of the printer has a door on the front that is open to reveal the built-in card reader, as shown in Figure 7. PIXMA MG5220 can handle a wide range of media cards including SD, SDHC, MultiMediaCard (v 4.1), MultiMediaCard Plus (v 4.1), CompactFlash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, and Memory Stick PRO Duo.
Canon Pixma MG5220 Setup
After removing the packing material, you need to install the print head. While this may sound intimidating on the neophyte, it’s relatively easy. The print head comes into place easily as do five ink cartridges. When you lift the scanner cover to start this procedure, the animation guide is displayed on the LCD to help you.
As a matter of fact, between the Getting Started Guide, the Animation settings guide on the LCD screen, the CD Wizard, and the print Network setup Guide, getting this all-in-one would be very easy. Even setting up a wireless network is easy to provide you know the name and password for your network. When we set everything on the MAC, the unit is printed, but it doesn’t scan. Going back over the setup instructions we decided that we had skipped the steps. When we repeat the procedure including all the appropriate steps, installation is good.
Hope to dedicate about an hour to the installation including 20 minutes or so to install the software. The Canon EX solution Menu and MP Navigator EX software are full-featured programs that have plenty of options for printing photos and scanning images while keeping it easy to use. We really like the ability to divide multiple images into separate scans, so we can load scanners with photos, but store them separately.
Canon has included their new Full HD movie Print software that allows you to print frames from HD movies. However, you need a Canon HD EOS DSLR or Canon PowerShot camera to make this software work well.
Part of the installation includes aligning the print head and, of course, loading the paper. The front tray, shown in Figure 10, holds 150 pieces of paper and also serves as the output tray. Therefore, the output tray is limited to 50 sheets. While some may find this strictly, since we are usually close-by to watching large print jobs, we don’t think it’s too difficult to remove the paper as it is approaching 50 sheets. Canon recommends that you use the rear tray, shown in Figure 11, for photo paper and envelopes. This tray is Double-Hinged and can be folded down when not in use. This Printer can handle 10 envelopes at a time and the tray will hold 150 sheets of paper.
If you ever make a paper jam because you forgot to open the paper output tray, you will enjoy this printer. The paper output tray opens automatically when printing or copying starts and the paper is ejected.
Using Canon Pixma MG5220
The scanner at 2400 x 4800 dpi generates high-quality scans. As shown in Figure 12, the scanner opens wide and the telescope covers a bit to accommodate books and thicker items. The software has a feature called Gutter Shadow correction which will offset the binding on a book, which is a nice feature. We missed the sheet feeder but found none on this unit.
As mentioned earlier, the software can sense some objects on the scanner’s bed and separate them into individual files. Auto Mode makes scanning on All-In-One easier than most. Auto Scan Mode recognizes the types of documents you scan and automatically uses the best settings. Auto Document Fix automatically analyzes and repairs the document thus ensuring that the text is easy to read and the image even has a color tone and contrast. However, the 5220 PIXMA also offers all the necessary scanning settings, if you want to set it up yourself.
There is a brief warming period when turning on the printer or waking from power saving mode, but as long as this power rises and prints daily, the printer is quieter than some of the others we have reviewed.
One of the nice features of this printer is that it has an automatic duplexing. As shown in Figure 13, the duplexer can be seen as a large lump at the back of the printer. This automatic double-sided printing feature saves paper costs and is very useful. The duplexer can be easily opened if there is a jammed paper, but during our testing, we do not have paper jams of any type.
Prints black text at 600 x 600 dpi. The text prints from PIXMA 5220 are very good. When printed in the highest mode output very close to the quality of the laser. Color printing rises to 9600 x 2400 dpi. There is also a draft saving ink mode for times you want a little Frugal.
Canon priced the printer at 11 ppm for black and 9.3 ppm for color and says that a 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm) printing photo will print in about 20 seconds. What actually slows down the printer is that it stops briefly between each document to allow the ink to dry. Because of this, we have never experienced stains, but the print speed is a little slower than stated. While this printer is not a devil’s speed, it is adequate for flat use.
As with other PIXMA printers, color photographs are also of excellent quality, especially when printed on Canon paper. Very vibrant colors. And the longevity of the photos is excellent. Canon stated that ink was assessed for 300 years if photos were stored in an archive-quality album with a plastic cover and kept in the dark. For those of us who want to display their photos, the ink is rated for 30 years when the photo is displayed under an indoor glass and not in direct sunlight.
The Canon PIXMA MG5220 has five standard capacity ink cartridges: Cyan, Magenta, yellow, and two black. One black is pigment-based, while the other is dye-based like color cartridges. Canon states that pigment-based black color results in better text quality.
The cost of ink, as usual, is difficult to assess. They depend on how much paper is actually covered with ink. Also, you should be aware that all colors can fit into black page printing and that both black cartridges can be pulled off on a single page. But to give you an idea of the cost: each separate color ink is assessed for between 500 and 520 pages and costs USD 14 (2.8 cents per page). The black ink cartridge is rated for 341 pages and costs USD 16 (4.7 cents per page). Black pigment cartridges are rated about 660 images and costs USD 14 (2.1 cents per page).
Conclusion
The Canon PIXMA MG5220 is a substantial All-in-one inkjet color that is printed, scanned, and copied well. It offers excellent printing on the text and very good printing on photos. Not only is the photo live, but their archive life is long enough. The controls are intuitive and easy to use. The software is very good and the automatic scanning feature works seamlessly.
We like some features including a Stop button and a paper tray that opens automatically if it’s closed when printing starts. We love the wide range of memory cards that receive printers. We also like the fact that you can scan multiple images and the software is smart enough to separate them to be stored individually.
The retail price of PIXMA MG5220 is USD 149.99 but can be found under USD 100, and at the price, it offers a lot of money. The Printer is energy start accordingly. The duplexer automatically works well and can save paper costs. Unfortunately, the cost of ink is the biggest negative for this printer.
